The match

Manchester United have completed the signing of Carlos Baleba from Brighton & Hove Albion for £70 million, which is a major improvement for their midfield with one of the most talented Premier League players.

United will pay £65 million for Baleba, and a £5 million potentially due in add-ons. Baleba has signed a five-year contract, with an agreement for an additional season.

The transfer took almost 12 months to be finalized. United knew that Baleba was a major midfield target and made an enquiry during the January transfer window before returning for him in the summer.

His arrival continues an important rebuild in the center of the pitch under Michael Carrick. Baleba becomes United’s third midfield addition of the transfer window following the signings of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.

Baleba Completes Long-Awaited Old Trafford Move

Baleba has lots of experience in the Premier League despite his age. He joined Brighton in 2023 and played 112 games in all the competitions.

Baleba played 35 times during his final season with Brighton, knowing that he joined Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations back then.

Baleba arrived at Brighton as a 19-year-old adapting to English football and left 3 years later having proved himself as a Cameroon international and a player capable of attracting interest from one of the Premier League’s biggest clubs.

In a farewell message to Brighton, Baleba thanked the club’s supporters, staff and players for helping him adapt in England, saying the experience would remain part of him wherever his career takes him.

Why Manchester United Have Invested in Baleba

United’s interest is rooted not only in Baleba’s potential but also in the specific qualities he can bring to their midfield.

Baleba is known for his physical strength and defensive aggression with the ability to lead possession through midfield. His speed and ball carrying allow him to break pressure and move his team forward.

Those traits are what make him special and different from United’s other summer midfield signings. Tielemans has the experience, distribution and technical control, while Santos offers both defensive awareness and box-to-box qualities. Baleba adds greater physical power and ball-winning ability in deeper area

That balance could prove particularly valuable as Carrick looks to build a midfield capable of controlling possession without becoming vulnerable during transitions.

Baleba’s ability to recover the ball and then advance possession himself offers United a potential link between defensive security and attacking progression. Rather than functioning solely as a holding midfielder, he can carry the ball beyond pressure and help move the team into more advanced areas.

United Back Baleba to Rediscover His Best Form

The £70 million investment is not without risk.

Baleba’s breakthrough performances at Brighton had previously established him among the Premier League’s most coveted young midfielders, prompting speculation over a transfer when he was still only 21. Brighton’s reported valuation of more than £100 million, however, prevented a deal from progressing at that stage.

His performances subsequently became less consistent, with his influence declining compared with the campaign that had initially attracted attention from leading clubs.

United are therefore investing partly in Baleba’s future ceiling rather than solely in his most recent form.

Baleba has previously cited midfielders such as Paul Pogba, Yaya Touré and Andrés Iniesta among the players he admires, while Neymar and Ronaldinho were also important influences during his formative years. Those inspirations are reflected in a playing style that combines physical attributes with a willingness to carry the ball and express himself in possession.

A Key Piece of Manchester United’s Midfield Rebuild

The addition of Baleba gives United a different profile as they reshape their midfield.

Santos and Tielemans have already expanded Carrick’s options, but Baleba offers the defensive power and athleticism required to compete in deeper areas while still possessing the ability to accelerate attacks once possession has been regained.

The challenge will be turning those attributes into consistent performances.

For United, the transfer represents a substantial commitment to a player whose strongest Premier League displays demonstrated considerable potential but whose recent form has been less convincing. At £65 million guaranteed, the expectation will be that Baleba develops into a central figure rather than simply providing additional squad depth.

His age gives United time to develop him, while his previous experience in English football should reduce the adaptation required compared with a player arriving directly from another league.

After almost a year of interest, United have finally secured one of their priority midfield targets. Baleba now has the opportunity to turn his potential into sustained performances at Old Trafford and establish himself at the heart of Carrick’s new-look midfield.
