The more important question is what exactly needs to happen for a market to win, lose, become void or be settled under a special condition.

A top-batter market is a good example. Picking the player expected to score the most runs seems straightforward, but the settlement rules can get complicated if two players finish with the same score, a batter retires hurt, doesn’t get the chance to bat, or rain reduces the number of overs.

Runs markets raise similar questions. A team-total line may appear straightforward before a T20 match, but an interruption can reduce the number of overs and change the sporting conditions. The fact that the match continues does not necessarily mean every betting market remains valid.

There are therefore three different rulebooks to keep in mind when researching cricket betting:

The laws and playing conditions governing the cricket match.

The sportsbook’s published terms governing settlement of the wager.

The gambling legislation and regulatory requirements applicable in Bermuda.

What Are Cricket Betting Markets?

Cricket betting markets give you different ways to predict what might happen during a match, from the final result to individual player performances. The match-winner market is the simplest, asking which team will win. Runs markets focus on whether a team or player will score more or fewer runs than a set line. In a top-batter market, the aim is to pick the player who will finish with the most runs among the eligible batters. A top-bowler market works in a similar way, with the focus on the player expected to take the most wickets.

You can also bet on more specific events and match statistics, such as how many sixes will be hit, the way a batter gets out, the score at which the next wicket falls, or other events that happen during the game.

The name of a market describes its basic prediction, but it may not contain every condition that affects settlement. A market called “top batter”, for example, does not by itself explain what happens if two players share the highest score or if a selected player never bats.

Common Cricket Betting Markets

Market

What it generally predicts

Settlement issues to check

Match winner

Which team wins the match

Draws, ties, no-results and Super Overs

Draw no bet

Which team wins, with special treatment for a draw where applicable

Draw and void provisions

Player runs

Whether a player finishes above or below a runs line

Participation, shortened matches and operator rules

Team runs

Whether a team finishes above or below a total

Reduced overs, abandonment and minimum-play rules

Top batter

Which qualifying batter scores the most runs

Ties, non-participation and dead-heat rules

Top bowler

Which qualifying bowler takes the most wickets

Ties, non-participation and shortened matches

Total sixes

Number of sixes by a player, team or match

Reduced overs and market-specific rules

Method of dismissal

How a specified wicket occurs

Reviews and exact market definition

Fall of wicket

Score when a specified wicket falls

What happens if the wicket never occurs

In-play

A prediction made after the match has started

Suspensions, repricing and changing match conditions

How Do Cricket Runs Lines and Over/Under Bets Work?

A runs line is based on a set number, and your bet is simply on whether the player or team will finish above or below that figure. For example, if a sportsbook sets a T20 team total at 165.5 runs, choosing Over 165.5 means the team needs to score 166 or more. If you take Under 165.5, the team must finish with 165 runs or fewer.

The same mathematical principle applies to player-runs markets. If a batter has a line of 34.5 runs, Over 34.5 requires at least 35 runs, while Under 34.5 requires 34 or fewer.

The calculation is simple. The settlement conditions are where the important questions begin. A team-total market might apply to one specific innings. A player-runs market might require the player to participate in a certain way. A rain interruption could reduce the scheduled number of overs, while an abandoned match could trigger a void provision.

What Happens When Rain Changes a Cricket Innings?

Rain can have a big impact on a limited-overs cricket match, especially when an interruption means there are fewer overs available. A shortened innings can completely change the way a team approaches its batting and the target it needs to chase.

When rain interrupts a match and the number of overs has to be reduced, the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method may be used under the relevant playing conditions to set a revised target for the chasing team. The ICC’s current playing-condition material includes DLS provisions for interrupted matches and publishes the applicable playing conditions for different competitions and formats. (icc)

DLS, however, is a cricketing mechanism. It does not by itself determine how a sportsbook settles every betting market. Consider a T20 match that begins with a 20-over innings but is later reduced to 10 overs. The cricket authorities may calculate a revised target, but the sportsbook may have separate rules governing whether a team-total, player-runs or sixes market remains valid. Some operators use minimum-play requirements or specific rules for shortened matches. Others can have different provisions for different markets.

The safest approach is therefore to treat the two questions separately:

What does the cricket competition require to determine the sporting result?

What does the sportsbook’s settlement rule require to determine the betting result?

Those answers can be related without being identical.

What Is a Match-Winner Bet?

The match-winner market asks you to predict which team will be recorded as the winner under the applicable competition and sportsbook rules. The possible sporting outcomes depend on the format. Test matches can end in a win, draw or tie in certain circumstances, while limited-overs competitions can use a Super Over or another prescribed procedure to determine a winner.

The ICC’s current playing conditions show that a tied limited-overs match can be followed by a Super Over, with the precise procedure determined by the relevant competition’s playing conditions. (Cloudinary)

Whether the Super Over also counts for another betting market is a separate question that must be answered using the operator’s rules.

What Is Draw No Bet in Cricket?

You select a team to win, and if that team wins, the selection wins. If the team loses, the selection loses. If the applicable result is a draw, the stake is generally returned under the market’s rules. The important qualification is that “draw no bet” should not be assumed to have identical conditions across all operators, competitions or betting platforms.

Before placing the wager, check how the operator defines the applicable result and how it treats ties, abandoned matches and any competition-specific procedures.

What Is a Top Batter Bet?

From my point of view the top-batter market generally asks you to predict which qualifying batter will score the most runs for the relevant team or competition. Imagine three qualifying batters finish with 78, 64 and 41 runs. The batter with 78 runs is the clear top scorer. The settlement becomes more complicated if two batters finish on the same score, a player does not bat, a player retires during the innings or the match is shortened.

What Happens If a Batter Retires Hurt?

The cricket rules concerning a batter’s retirement do not automatically determine the result of a betting market. Under ICC playing conditions, a batter who retires because of illness, injury or another unavoidable cause can be entitled to resume the innings. If the batter does not return, the scorecard can record the player as retired not out under the applicable playing conditions.

For example, an operator could specify that a player must face a delivery for a player-performance market to stand. Another operator could use different qualification criteria. Therefore, “retired hurt” should not automatically be treated as a win, loss or void. The correct settlement depends on the exact market rules.

What Happens If Two Batters Are Joint Top Scorers?

Suppose Player A and Player B both score 82 runs and every other qualifying batter scores less. There is no sole top scorer. The two players share the highest score, the dead-heat provision may then apply.

Dead-heat rules are designed to deal with situations in which multiple selections share the relevant winning position. The calculation can reduce the return compared with a straightforward single winner, depending on the operator’s published rules. If a sportsbook offers a top-batter market, read its dead-heat provisions before assuming that the highest-scoring player automatically produces a full winning return.

Cricket Betting Markets Explained: Runs Lines, Top Batter, Sixes & More 18+ | Gamble responsibly Cricket Betting Markets Explained I guess you are a new cricket betting in Bermuda, if I got this, you have to understand then that the odds is only one part of understanding a bet.
